BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10 SPORTS) – It’s the end of an era. Frank Beamer has announced his retirement on Sunday, November 1, 2015.
The Hokies head coach for almost 30-years said he was leaving the spot at his alma matter. Beamer alluded to retirement for the first time, in any real sense, earlier in the 2015 season when he told ESPN he might like to see his son take his place.
An official replacement for Frank Beamer was not officially announced. Beamer said he will finish out the season.
Current and former players, plus broadcasters and fans took to social media, wishing the coach well and gushing about his career.
Fans in Blacksburg were shocked by the announcement, but glad their coach decided to retire at a time when the team could conduct a full search for a replacement.
Beamer’s career spanned nearly 30 years after his 1969 retirement from the school. He had 253 wins, only 120 losses and 2 ties. He also took the Hokies to 22 straight bowl games.
