Erie Canal officials approve $5 million Outer Harbor project

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) Board of Directors approved a $5 million improvement plan for generating more activity along the lakefront, Monday, calling it the Buffalo Outer Harbor Access and Activation Project.

The $5 million is for a laundry list of improvements at the Outer Harbor, that officials are calling the “Blueprint”, for what is now the Buffalo Harbor State Park, and an adjacent 160 acres of state owned land along the Outer Harbor.

The ECHDC also settled on a management firm to oversee events at the park–the firm is part of the company that has given Buffalo professional baseball, the Wing Festival, and snacks and creamer for your coffee.

It’s called B.R. Guest, Ltd., and it is a subsidiary of Rich Products. Their job is to get the Outer Harbor hopping, starting next year, just as Canalside has now become a year round destination.

Buffalo Bisons public relations director Brad Bisbing, speaking on behalf of B.R. Guest said, “We are excited at the possibility of that becoming a spot for Buffalo entertainment, and just another piece of the puzzle here in downtown Buffalo.”

Bisbing added, they are negotiating Guest’s deal with ECHD, which calls for the firm to pay rent and a percentage of their proceeds from events at the park.

“It is so exciting, to come down, whether to the ballpark or to the arena, and now to add to the Outer Harbor, it is just a great time to be in downtown Buffalo.”

Other projects being considered: a mountain bike course, a family playground recreation area, including a beach and game zone.
