Distracted mom making video gets jail for crash

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The woman who drove into three people in front of Centennial High School as she was taking a cell phone video was sentenced to jail and probation on Wednesday.

Elizabeth Dove will spend five months in jail and another three years on probation, and during probation will not be allowed to have a cell phone with a camera.

The 24-year-old was shooting a video of her own child in the backseat of her car when she hit the students. None were seriously hurt, but all were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The prosecutor said Dove made the choice to take the video at that time and caused the crash.

The victims got a chance to speak before the sentence was imposed. Julie Hollenbeck Newman, the mother of one student, said her daughter has sustained tens of thousands of dollars worth of uncovered medical bills.

“It was absolutely terrifying, the worst call a mom could get,” Newman said. “That your child has been injured and that you need to get to the hospital as soon as possible. It was very scary.”

The judge arranged for Dove’s 5 months in jail to be served in increments to allow Dove to keep working and go to school. That will help Dove pay back the victims, though the amount of restitution will not be determined for another year.

She will serve her first segment beginning in December.
