Woman cooks Thanksgiving dinner for those in need in memory of daughter

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (WCMH) – At the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Sarah Wood and her crew are cooking for close to 500 people.

Her faith, volunteers, and donations make it all happen.

“There’s definitely a need in the community; one for fellowship and people are hungry. Kids are hungry,” said Wood.

There will be 19 turkeys, 45 pounds of sweet potatoes, three bushels of apples and 250 pounds of potatoes.

All the work goes to give a hot and free Thanksgiving meal to those who would otherwise go without, and it all started as a Home Economics class for Sarah’s daughter, Carissa. Now it’s part of their family.

“After, we didn’t do it for school anymore. We decided to do it in memory of my daughter who died in a fire,” said Wood.

Her daughter’s memory and Sarah’s mission: feeding the souls of those in need for Thanksgiving. “I love to cook and I told God that I wanted to feed people, and he’s definitely provided me with what I need for the community.”
