Business owners signing petition to stop Elmwood development

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Elmwood Village business owners are banding together to try to stop development.

Ciminelli Real Estate Corp. is in the preliminary planning phase for multiple apartment complexes along Elmwood, starting at Bird and extending to Bidwell – a block where there are many small businesses.

Business owners opposed to the complexes construction are signing a petition and distributing it to those around the village in hopes to gather enough signatures to stop the developers from coming in to the area.

Within two days, Sabri Ahmeti, the owner of Gino’s Pizza, has filled his signature sheet.

“Most of these people are residents of Elmwood,” said Ahmeti. “So as far as I know, every small business around here does have a petition and it’s getting filled by customers, residents, locals; they’re all against it.”

Ahmeti is against it too. His pizza place is directly across from the where the development is set to take place.

“It will impact me for sure,” said Ahmeti. “If you slow foot traffic around here, it will impact all the small businesses as well.”

Ahmeti said he is hopeful the petition with carry some weight and stop a big project from coming into the village.

“In this area, to me it’s not Elmwood Village anymore. I would like to see this as a village.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
