Erie County’s Rath Building to have increased security

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — In the wake of recent world events, many operations are increasing security, notably the Buffalo Bills at Sunday’s game, but also government offices.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced on Monday there would be increased security at the Edward A. Rath County Office Building starting on Tuesday.

The increased security includes new policies, like forcing Erie County employees to show identification to enter the building and forcing all others to register with security to enter the building.

Another policy, according to Poloncarz on Twitter, will be the ability to search all bags belonging to those who aren’t Erie County employees before entering the building.

Deputies of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office will be stationed as security at the building. Sheriff’s Office officials say the policies aren’t due to a specific incident, but part of a new Erie County initiative. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
