DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WIVB) – Even with much of the area under a wind advisory on Monday, the weather remains unseasonably warm, and plenty of people are out and about taking advantage of the record-breaking warmth while they can.
“It’s awesome. Wonderful,” said Fran Ward, as he was getting onto his motorcycle Monday morning.
Whether it’s hitting the road on your motorcycle in mid-December, or pounding the pavement in a pair of shorts as our News 4 crew saw one mail carrier doing, it doesn’t feel or look like winter. “It’s crazy. I’ve never gone through a hunting season without having snow on the ground,” said Dunkirk resident Derek Deszcz, who was parked at the Dunkirk Pier on Monday enjoying the view.
Quite a few people were out at the pier getting their fill of this warm weather on Monday. Others headed out to local parks to soak in the sun. And, Anglers on Cattaraugus Creek fishing for trout Monday morning had plenty of company on the waterfront. “The fishing has been awesome!” one angler, Joslyn Leung, told News 4.
The fishing is experience is quite the turn around from this time last year. “Normally we freeze our butts off,” Leung laughed.
Still, some people are missing the snow. And some people, like Dunkirk resident Jerry Kozlowski, have worries we’ll pay for this later. “I would really like to see the temperature in the lake go down so we don’t get all that lake effect.” he said.
Even so, most people we’ve talked to are happy to have this weird winter weather for as long as they can. “I like the weather,” Deszcz said. “It can stay like this.”
Of course, we are expecting some snow on Friday, but even that leaves us with a pretty low chance for a white Christmas here. Most people who talked to our News 4 crew on Monday said that’s just fine with them.
