BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Red Cross is helping eight people following a fire on the city’s east side Wednesday morning.
The call came out around 6:15 a.m. on Kilhoffer Street. Firefighters were forced to get out of the burning house and fight the flames defensively as the fire tore through the home.
“The rear of the building was pretty well involved,” recalled Division Chief Michael Tuberdyke. “Initially, we went interior, but because of the fire, the stairs were compromised in the rear, we couldn’t make the attic, the second floor was difficult, just because of the fire conditions. Crews did everything they could. But we had to pull them out because the roof began to become compromised.”
Tuberdyke says the fire did about $100,000 worth of damage to the house where it started, and the flames did about $10,000 worth of damage to the outside of the house next door.
Everyone inside was able to make it out safely.
Investigators are still working to determine where the fire started and what may have caused it.
