LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) — As Christmas week wraps up and people head back home, their wallets may be thicker. Those plump pockets and penny saving is happening because of what’s going on at the pump.
“We have some changes in the gas price on the way down,” said Cassie Hayes who is traveling from Potsdam to Hamburg to visit her family.
She is one of thousands of drivers on the road Sunday, saying the ride has been uneventful.
Following the price of gas– is another story. That’s been very eventful these last few months. This time last year, it would have cost you 67 cents a gallon more.
“I bet you we’ve only spent about $30,” said Hayes. “It’s usually $75 or $80. So it really has been a big savings.”
The national average for gas right is under $2; Buffalo’s average price is $2.19 per gallon.
“They’re a little cheaper farther south from here,” said Jeff Culpepper. “It was cheap enough it lured us into making this drive so we figured why not.”
Jeff Culpepper is heading back to Morgantown, West Virginia. For the 400 mile journey, he says he has only spent around $100 on gas. He usually comes up to visit his western New York family members every other year. This was supposed to be an off year but those plans changed after seeing the prices at pump.
“This year we were like eh – it’s nice weather; it’s cheap gas — let’s go,” said Culpepper. “So we did.”
The savings are keeping these travelers smiling as they hit the roads once again.
“I do feel I’m saving money,” said Hayes. “Definitely every week the gas prices go down is a huge savings”
