Tornado tears through apartment complex in hard-hit Garland, Texas

GARLAND, Texas (KXAN) — As daylight broke on Garland on Monday morning, people came out to see their damaged apartments, some for the first time.

When most of DFW was going to work Monday morning, Michael Johnson and his son Jay came back to the Landmark at Lake Village West Apartments to see what was left.

“It literally sounded like a giant was stepping on trees in the forest,” said Johnson describing the storm as he walked through the rubble with his son. “This is very humbling and very surreal.”

“The corner of the building which would be the very back corner here is where my car was parked and it’s now sitting right there. That’s the wheel you see in the building right there. That’s my car,” he says pointing into the middle of the apartment complex.

Saturday night he was there with his family, in his second floor apartment, when the storm came through. They grabbed the mattress and took shelter in the bathroom.

“Ears popping, water started to come up out of the toilet and from there it was just, to mean, the longest 15 seconds of my life,” says Johnson. The storm passed. Dozens turned on their flashlights and began to search.

“Some guy, he was hollering for a Jonathan. He was looking for a loved one. For some reason I started hollering Jonathan. It was unreal.”

Johnson says he always gives his kids the big kid answers, but this one is hard. “Trust in God, and we will figure it out. Whatever happens at least we’re facing it together.”

Currently, Johnson and his family are staying with extended family. They have not received information on whether or not the apartment complex will find them temporary housing within its apartment complex family.
