BUFFALO N.Y. (WIVB) — Thousands of people are welcoming the new year at Buffalo’s ball drop.
“We’re well prepared to make sure people have a good time tonight,” said Mayor Byron Brown.
With the increase in people comes more security. The mayor says every major city celebration has more security; this year, after world and national events, Buffalo Police and other local agencies have more members on hand.
“Public safety is a critical issue, critically important so we’ve been upping our security across the city,” said Mayor Byron Brown. “Tonight we will have a very secure city.”
While security is on city officials minds, Celebrating is on residents.
The Hyatt hosted two wedding parties to ring in the year.
“Every year I think for New Years I think you want to be with family friends so when you get married why not have every body together at once,” said Joe Fischer along with his new wife Nicole.
For some, the ball drop is a tradition.
“I look forward to bringing in the downtown buffalo,” said Todd Timmons, who has been coming to the celebration for seven years. “It’s always a big crowd. Like as soon as the ball drops everyone is counting down and yelling and screaming and jumping and hugging. It’s a great atmosphere and that’s why I love it.”
