Lucky WNY resident snags $50,000 in Powerball drawing

AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Lottery officials say New Yorkers are cashing in big on the Powerball, and one western New Yorker is proving that claim.

One lucky person bought a ticket at the 7-Eleven on Harlem Road in Amherst and will be $50,000 richer once cashing it in. The lottery player hasn’t yet cashed in the winning ticket, but can do so at the Buffalo lottery customer service center on Genesee Street.

“While no one hit the jackpot prize, dozens of New Yorkers are vastly richer thanks to Powerball,” Gardner Gurney, a New York lottery official, said.

The massive Powerball jackpot has climbed to a whopping $1.4 billion — the largest jackpot of any lottery in U.S. history. New Yorkers have contributed $155.8 million to that massive jackpot. Those sales have contributed more than $54 million to New York education, officials said. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
