ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — Just a day after a 4-year-old girl suffered a gunshot wound to her torso, police say they’re still piecing facts together.
Officers say they responded on Sunday night to Sandpiper Court to find the girl bleeding and conscious. First responders treated her at the scene before rushing her to Women and Children’s Hospital.
Less than a day later, the girl is doing better after surgery, police say. The investigation continues by Orchard Park police as they say a relative of the child held the handgun when it fired off.
Although police are calling it an accident, there are laws in New York State that pertain to recklessness and negligence, however police have not said if those possibilities are being considered.
“Our detectives are working with the Erie County District Attorney’s Office,” Mark Pacholec, Orchard Park Police Chief, said. “As with any other tool or weapon, you have to be careful how you use it. Always make sure that the weapon’s pointed in a safe direction and be cautious with it.”
As of now, no charges have been filed, but the case is under review.
