Officers told Media General contributors Nova Perez, 4, and her sister Luna, 3, were taken by their biological father, 24-year-old Alex Perez, after a double homicide at a home near M-63 and Park Street in Berrien County.

Around 3 a.m. ET a deputy from the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado came across a parked vehicle with the lights on and engine running with a man and two young children inside in the city of Georgetown. Georgetown is about 1,100 miles from Coloma where the girls were taken, about a 16-hour drive.

Upon further investigation, the deputy discovered there was a felony warrant from Michigan State Patrol for the driver. Perez was taken into custody after a brief struggle at the scene. Police believe he was driving to California where he has connections.

Police in Colorado said the girls have been taken into protective custody unharmed.

MSP said they began receiving calls around 11:30 p.m. Thursday for assistance. An Amber Alert was issued just before 2 a.m. Friday and many people woke up to the text alerts that were sent out. Police canceled the Amber Alert just before 4:30 a.m.

A heavy police presence remained on scene of the double homicide in Berrien County early Friday morning.

Police said one of the victims is the mother of the two little girls who were abducted. The other victim was a man believed to be related to the mother.

It appears the two victims died from blunt force trauma, but an official cause of death is still under investigation. Police believe the homicides happened sometime between 7 and 8 p.m. Wednesday, although the bodies weren’t discovered until 9 p.m. Thursday by a family member.

According to police, when the family member came to the house the front door was locked, but there was an upstairs window that was open so they climbed up a ladder into the home. They found one of the victims upstairs and one of the victims in the main level of the home.

The names of the victims have not been released at this time.
