New study says women fight flu virus better than men

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — This season, many people are fighting the flu. Have you stopped to wonder who is a better patient? Men or women?

In a Twitter poll News 4 ran on Thursday, 19 percent of people said men, 53 percent said women, and the remaining 28 percent said gender does not make a difference.

There is science behind this as a new study at Johns Hopkins University says the answer boils down to estrogen.

Estrogen weakened the flu virus in nasal cells from the female test subjects, but not the males during the study.

So, the answer to who fights it better? Women. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
