Fire strikes apartment near Cheektowaga border

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A fire at an apartment near the Cheektowaga border caused $40,000 in damage Sunday night.

Fire crews responded to the blaze on Beiter Walk around 11:30 p.m. The residence was right off of Eggert Road.

The firefighters rushed into the apartment thinking they were looking for an elderly woman after hearing the initial report, but no one was found. The Battalion Chief said they only had one problem fighting the flames.

“It was a good, quick knock down,” said Battalion Chief Mike Swanekamp. “It’s tough because the address is a sidewalk — long stretch from parking area to the building.”

The fire was contained to the living room and hurt no one.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and authorities say that they have been given numerous contradictory stories from witnesses.
