CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB)- It was about 1:45am Tuesday when a Dodge Avenger veered across the center line on Beach Road near Maryvale Drive and crashed into a home ending up completely in the basement.
“Things happen,” said the homeowner named Gerald, who called 911 thinking his furnace had exploded.
“So then I heard voices down in the basement and I said to the police ‘There’s someone in my basement and I’m the only one living here.”
Dispatchers advised him to get out of the house because of a gas leak.
“So I got out of the house, walked over to the side and a guy came crawling out of the hole in the wall.”
The driver, 24 year old Marcellus Hutcherson of Buffalo made it out on his own, but his passenger Caesar Scott of Cheektowaga suffered a serious spinal injury according to Assistant U-Crest Fire Chief Bryan Chapman.
“He was trapped on the passenger side of the vehicle. His seat was all the way reclined so it was tricky cut job to get him out.”
The home’s furnace, electric box, and water system were all damaged. Gerald has lived here the entire 80 years of his life, but for now has to stay in a motel.
“It’s a, I’m sure a very scary situation for the homeowner, very scary for the individual in the car,” said Cheektowaga Police Assistant Chief James Speyer. “We’re just thankful that nobody died in this accident. We’ve had plenty of vehicles strike buildings, go partially into buildings, but this is completely in the basement. This is a little different.”
Assistant Chief Speyer says charges are pending, and police did take a blood sample from the driver, but at at this point police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in causing the crash.
