South Buffalo girl forms bond with ‘Jane the Virgin’ star

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Jessica Casanova never misses an episode of Jane the Virgin. Star Gina Rodriguez is her favorite actress and one of her role models.

“I was introduced to it by a couple of friends,” the seventeen year old told News 4. “Then that’s when I started getting into it. I was like, ‘oh she’s pretty funny! I’ll give it a shot.'”

The senior at the Charter School for Applied Technologies will probably be a fan for life, ever since she tweeted Gina asking for a favor, and got a positive response in return.

“I said that I would like to wear it to prom, her Golden Globes dress,” she explained. “She said, ‘well maybe I can make this happen, I’ll direct message you and see where we can go from there.'”

That public exchange was back in January and made headlines around the entertainment industry. The two have been in close contact ever since. They’ve bonded over an ongoing private conversation on Twitter.

Jessica read some of the direct messages from Gina, which Gina gave her permission to do. “That dress is everything to me, and my first time at the Golden Globes.” one said. “I thought about somewhere, someone might borrow it, and then you came along,” it continued.

So now no only is Gina going to loan Jessica her Badgley Mishka dress — the one she was wearing when she took home her first Globe in 2015. She also promised to make the trip to Buffalo for a visit, too.

“I told her that if she decides on coming, my mom knows how to make Spanish food, and she could stay for dinner,” Jessica said. “She said that’s amazing, and she said that this message melts her heart.”

“We brought her up you know, to be very respectful, and kind to others,” Jessica’s mother, Michelle Costanzo said. “You know, you treat people like you want to be treated. She’s just a good girl.”

Costanzo was a little skeptical at first. But now she is looking forward to meeting her daughter’s new friend.

“I wasn’t going to be able to buy her a 7 to 800 hundred dollar dress, but now she is going to have a dress to die for,” Costanzo said. “She is going to look so beautiful so, so pretty.”

Jessica’s prom isn’t until May, but her whole family has been watching the CW series together from the beginning while they wait for the big day. The show and it’s star have a whole new meaning now.

“I wish I could give her the world. But Gina helped me out.”

“I told her she was making my dreams come true, and she said we were doing it for each other,” Jessica said. “I just can’t wait to meet her, and tell her how thankful I am.” )) provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
