Surgery for shoulders developed with WNY doctor

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A new surgical technique can make shoulder surgery less painful for patients, and the procedure was developed in large part in Western New York.

The cutting edge technology uses a 3D cage, developed by a company called Coventus.

The cage looks like a stent, and is used in a similar way by surgeons. They say it’s an alternative to waiting a long time to be able to move it or having physical therapy, according to Dr. Paul Paterson, M.D., with Excelsior Orthopaedics.

Other attempts at surgery ended with the shoulder falling apart, according to Dr. Paterson.

A shoulder patient who agreed to the surgery says she was treated much faster. After a consultation, Melanie Locicero had surgery within a week, and “I’ve almost got my movement back,” she told News 4.
