Buffalo teacher pleads guilty to stealing from PTO group

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo teacher pleaded guilty in court on Thursday to attempting to steal from a parent teacher organization (PTO) at Lovejoy Discovery School, P.S. 43.

Prosecutors say 44-year-old Patti Nabinger, a technology teacher, pleaded guilty to fourth degree attempted grand larceny, after investigation uncovered she misappropriated funds from the PTO’s bank account while serving as a volunteer treasurer.

In total, the group lost $3,530 from Nabinger’s embezzlement, but the school soon after placed her on administrative leave. Nabinger repaid $3,000 to the organization, but officials say she still profited by over $500 from the theft.

“The district was apprised of the allegations in September 2015, investigated the matter, notified police, and placed the teacher on paid leave,” Elena Cala, Buffalo School District spokesperson, said. “All appropriate protocols were followed.”

Nabinger’s guilty plea is a reduced charge, as she originally faced charges of grand larceny. She’ll return to court on April 1.
