Thousands ask for environmentally friendly way to play “Roll up the Rim”

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Thousands of environmentally conscious “Roll up the Rim to Win” players are petitioning their coffee provider Tim Hortons to accommodate reusable mug users.

An ever-popular game each year during the colder months, “Roll up the Rim to Win” is a Tim Hortons promotion that affords loyal customers opportunities to get free rewards, like coffee, doughnuts or more if luck cooperates.

Typically, “Roll up the Rim to Win” players participate by consuming their beverages in the vehicles in which they’re served, but that has environmentally conscious consumers unnerved. Although customers who choose to use reusable mugs to consumer their Tim Hortons coffee are still given cups to participate in the promotion, they say the act is still wasteful, and defeats the purpose of even bringing the reusable mug.

Now those customers are banding together to ask for a more environmentally friendly way to play the game, potentially in the form of a code to redeem online, or a smaller ticket.

According to a petition filed on, 2015’s “Roll up the Rim to Win” contest saw 306 million paper cups used and tossed, and the petition filers say 15 million cups would be saved if reusable cup consumers were considered.

Thus far, the petition has nearly 16,000 signatures, and is seeking 25,000 signatures to send it off to Tim Hortons management. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
