KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The man accused of murdering six people in Saturday night’s shooting rampage had gone through the initial phases of becoming a police officer.

Jason Dalton, 45, graduated from Kalamazoo Valley Community College in the fall of 1992, the school confirmed Tuesday. He’d studied at the school beginning in 1989.

Dalton graduated with an associates of applied science degree in law enforcement and criminal justice. A friend of Dalton’s who was his best man at his wedding told 24 Hour News 8 that Dalton never actually got into police work, though he’d wanted to pursue it.

Officials at KVCC said that Dalton did not enroll in the academy at their school which would have been the next step towards becoming a certified police officer.

State officials have yet to confirm whether Dalton completed an academy program elsewhere.

KVCC officials declined to comment further citing student privacy laws.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas said officers are now looking into Dalton’s past and personal life and working to put together a profile of the person he is.

So far, Matyas said, they’ve not come across any information that explains why he might have committed the crimes of which he is accused.
