Cheektowaga officer breaks leg while chasing suspect

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Cheektowaga Police officer broke his leg and was hospitalized Tuesday morning while chasing a suspect.

The officer believed a suspect wanted on a bench warrant was at a home on Gary Lane.

When authorities approached the residence shortly after 4 a.m., the suspect, Robert Buss, 21, bolted out of the back window, according to Cheektowaga Police.

Buss was accused of stealing a car last Summer.

After leaving the home, police say he was seen in his underwear running through yards and into the woods.

The officer who was injured during the chase was climbing a fence when he broke his leg. His boot lace had got caught on the fence, according to police.

The officer will need surgery, but police say he will be okay.

Buss was later caught and arrested. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
