HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) — Slick roads caused havoc overnight in western New York.
One of the worst instances of troubling traffic happened when a 33-car pileup occurred on Milestrip Road in Hamburg shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Hamburg Police say the Milestrip accident happened at the railroad overpass near the Martin Road exit.
Police say that as they were responding, the situation began to escalate quickly. Many more accidents began to happen in the same area and police determined that the road needed to be closed as fast as possible.
Along with that, police closed the overpass for Route 5 in both directions.
Icy roadways had “deteriorated to a dangerous condition,” according to police.
While checking on drivers involved in the accident, police say one of their patrol cars also fell victim as it was struck by another vehicle.
Amid the unfolding mayhem, officers from various other departments such as Orchard Park and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office came to the scene.
After authorities set up a command post at Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Hall, drivers were taken there for safety.
No major injuries were reported during the series of crashes and the road was reopened shortly after 1:20 a.m.
