Sheriff: Indiana man causes ‘scalping’ injuries to 3-year-old girl

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — An Indiana man faces a felony charge after authorities say he caused injuries described as “scalping” to a 3-year-old girl.

The girl’s mother, Noel Maxwell of Frankfort, discovered swelling on the toddler’s head Feb. 23, according to the Howard County Sheriff’s Department.

Maxwell told detectives her boyfriend, Andrew J. Milburn, 35, of Frankfort, had returned home with the girl earlier in the night. Milburn told Maxwell the 3-year-old had fallen from a chair while the pair visited his parent’s home in Russiaville, according to the sheriff’s department.

Riley Hospital at IU Health doctors described the injuries as “scalping” and said they were not consistent with a fall.

Investigators determined Milburn hit the child multiple times in the head and pulled her hair while at the Russiaville home in the 500 block of North Liberty Street.

Milburn was arrested Tuesday night and taken to the Howard County Jail.

He’s charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a person less than 14 years of age, a level three felony.

Scalping is “when the scalp is forcibly removed from the skull causing internal bleeding. The blood settles around the skull causing extensive bruising and swelling,” the sheriff’s department said.
