Unusual winter temperatures keep insects active

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The winter months are usually a quiet time for insect exterminators, but this season has been different.

“There hasn’t been enough of a consistent deep freeze to suppress the population like it normally would.” explains Sean Magierski, Service Manager at Empire State Exterminating. “We’ve already had plenty of customers with ant problems, flying insect problems, etc. So my hypothesis is it’s going to be a very busy year in the pest control industry.”

It’s that lack of a prolonged deep freeze that has been key. While we’ve certainly had our share of cold spells, over the past month there hasn’t been anything consistent, with temperatures fluctuating wildly from week to week. This has confused insects into being more active, instead of a persistent cold winter that normally keeps them more dormant.

Experts expect it to be a bigger pest season as we head towards the warm months. If you see any insects in your house, it is recommended to call an expert to come take care of it.
