Campus mourns the loss of Buff State senior following fatal crash

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Students at Buffalo State are remembering a friend and classmate after senior Eddie Hernandez died in a weekend crash.

More details are surfacing about the crash as students at the school continue to hold vigils and memorials in Hernandez’s memory. Police continue to investigate the crash that ultimately led to the 21-year-old’s death, and the injury of two others in a jeep Hernandez drove.

Police say he died at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and East North Street early Saturday morning after not pulling over when police attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

As officers followed Hernandez’s jeep, it crashed into a pole. The crash remains under full investigation, but Hernandez’s soon to be alma mater released a statement.

The school says Hernandez was a criminal justice major who made the Dean’s List several times and will be missed.

Students came together Monday night for a vigil and memorial at 7 p.m. on Buff State’s campus. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
