BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The driver who survived a high speed crash between a pickup truck and a car pleaded guilty on Monday to a felony.
Erie County officials say Sarah Skotnicki, 26, crossed a double yellow line on Sept. 9, 2015, just before 11:30 a.m. on French Road in the Village of Depew, colliding with a car. The collision killed 72-year-old Carol Dion, who drove the car, and injured her granddaughter, 23-year-old Katrina Dion.
Skotnicki drove erratically before the crash, speeding down the road at about 72 miles per hour in the 30 mile per hour zone. Investigation revealed Skotnicki drove high under the influence of a chemical found in an electronics cleaner. Police say she “huffed” a stolen bottle of Endust from a Target on Walden Avenue just before the crash.
Skotnicki pleaded guilty to felony criminally negligent homicide, a crime that could land her in prison for up to four years.
She will face sentencing on April 21 and remain in the Erie County Holding Center until that date.
