Erie Co. Sheriff uses new resource to help in alleged drugged driving arrest

TOWN OF ALDEN, N.Y. (WIVB) — Erie County Sheriff’s Deputies say they recently used a new resource to help in the arrest of an impaired driving suspect.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a crash at a residence on Broadway in the Town of Alden. The crash damaged a utility pole as well as a front yard.

At the scene, authorities say the driver showed signs of impairment. After noticing this, officials called in a drug recognition expert (DRE) for an evaluation of the driver.

The DRE said Hamburg resident Courtney Nowak, 27, was under the influence of drugs. She was charged with DWAI-narcotics and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Nowak was released on appearance tickets for Alden Town Court. A passenger injured in the crash was taken to ECMC for treatment. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
