2 charged in alleged drug smuggling ring at Erie Co. Holding Center

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Alleged drug smuggling has resulted in charges against an Erie County Holding Center inmate and another person.

Erie County Sheriff’s deputies say an investigation into alleged smuggling culminated with the arrests of inmate Gerald Kwasniewski, 35, and Rebecca Smith, 43.

Investigators began looking into the alleged smuggling when a holding center employee said they discovered Suboxone strips in a letter addressed to an inmate.

Law enforcement officials say Kwasniewski and Smith were the lead individuals trying to smuggle the drugs into the facility.

Each were charged with introducing dangerous contraband into a prison — a felony, and a misdemeanor count of conspiracy.

Kwasniewski was already being held in the holding center for charges out of Buffalo, Hamburg and Lackawanna. Smith is now being held there as well pending arraignment in Buffalo City Court.
