AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — A thrilling Saturday for the University at Buffalo as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams faced off in the MAC championship game. Not only did the women’s basketball team take home a title, but the men’s team brought home a MAC Championship title for the second year in a row.
Several fans cheered on UB at Santora’s Pizza Saturday night including school officials, alumni and out of state fans. The momentum from the women’s game continued on throughout the night as they made history winning the first ever MAC Championship title for the university.
It was a familiar scene at Santora’s as many of the fans were in the exact same spot as last year when the men’s team took home the title for the first time in history.
“I think it’s really great, I think it’s good for the community as well as UB. They get a lot of attention, it’s a really good state school, one of the best in the state so having them win back to back years it gives them the attention that they deserve,” Matthew Vallio, UB alumni.
“They’ve come along way, they have a new coach this year for the men’s team, they’ve lost a couple of players this year and they’ve done such a great job so I hope they win, but win or lose your right, I am very proud of them,” Mary Garlick Roll, President of UB Alumni Association.
The woman’s team won the championship game by a buzzer beater and the men’s team won by 64 to 61.
