Researchers: Lack of sleep affects women worse than men

LOUGHBOUROUGH, England (WIVB) — Women have the perfect excuse to hit the snooze button and sleep a little longer.

Researchers say women need more sleep than men — 20 minutes more per night.

The doctors at Lougbourough University in England, who performed the research, found women’s brains are more complex, and wired differently.

All of the extra “thinking” about complex scenarios can be tiring.

Women often multi-task and use more of their brain than men. That lack of sleep translates into women being anxious, angry and depressed.

The study reinforces 2013 research from Duke University.

The study also revealed that poor sleep affects women more than men. That goes beyond just being tired. Lack of sleep can make your risk for heart problems worse, even increasing the risk of having a stroke.

Men did not show the same impacts. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
