Man pleads guilty to gun possession, dangerous bike riding in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man pleaded guilty on Friday to fleeing police due to illegally having a firearm on his person.

Officers say they approached John Simmons, 22, for riding his bicycle’s handlebars in the middle of the street in May of 2015, but he dropped his bike and fled into an alleyway.

Police say during the chase, they noticed he threw away a semi-automatic pistol and later were able to confirm his DNA was on the pistol.

Simmons pleaded guilty as charged to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Police say Simmons is a previously convicted violent felon, who isn’t allowed to own a gun.

When he’s sentenced in April, he faces at least seven years behind bars, but no more than 15 years in state prison. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
