Sheriff: Deputies attacked in 2 separate incidents at Erie Co. Holding Center

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Within one hour, two deputies were attacked in separate incidents at the Erie County Holding Center Thursday night, according to authorities.

Erie County Sheriff’s deputies say the first incident happened when inmate Seymour Atkinson spat on a deputy. Authorities say charges against Atkinson, who is being held on weapon and parole violation charges, are pending.

Two assault charges were placed against Atkinson previously while he was housed in a detention facility.

Just about an hour later, another deputy was allegedly attacked by an inmate wielding a fire extinguisher.

The extinguisher had been removed from its mounting unit.

Orlando Echevarria, who was already in the Holding Center on assault and harassment accusations, now faces more charges.

Both deputies who were attacked were not injured and continued their shifts.
