OLEAN, N.Y. (WIVB) — After gunshots rang out in the City of Olean, police rushed to the scene of an apartment on Buffalo Street near Sullivan Street Tuesday morning.

Reports warned of an active shooter who holed up inside an apartment just before 11 a.m. after officers served an eviction notice. A gunman who police have now identified as Christopher T. Beach, 43, fired off multiple shots, injuring one of the civilians attempting to serve the eviction. The victim sustained a gunshot wound in the torso, requiring him to be evacuated to the Erie County Medical Center via Mercy Flight.

The City of Olean police chief tells News 4 the victim is in stable condition.

Following the shooting, a standoff ensued for roughly six hours, with police making multiple attempts to coax the suspect out of the apartment after evacuating all bystanders out of the apartment.

Officers say they utilized tear gas and eventually forcibly took Beach into custody inside the apartment by members of SWAT.

Beach stands charged with first-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He remains in police custody as he awaits arraignment.
