SARDINIA, N.Y. (WIVB) — First responders and police rushed to the scene of a serious accident Wednesday afternoon that closed a local road.

Erie County Sheriff’s Deputies say a car and a tractor trailer collided on Route 16 in Sardinia just before 1:45 p.m., causing the route to be closed from Allen Road to Route 39 for several hours.

Police are still assessing situation, but have confirmed three people inside the car were extracted and found to have injuries. First responders rushed the three victims to the Erie County Medical Center.

As of Thursday morning, the car’s 47-year-old female driver had been treated and discharged by the hospital. Two teens injured in the accident remain hospitalized.

A 16-year-old passenger remains in serious condition in the intensive care unit after having surgery for internal injuries. A 19-year-old suffered multiple broken bones and a head injury.

Preliminary investigation by New York State Police suggested the driver of the tractor trailer, who sustained no injuries, is at fault. Police say the driver passed a stop sign and wasn’t paying attention.

New York State Police and Erie County Sheriff’s Deputies say their investigation is continuing, but the tractor trailer driver could face charges in the near future. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
