Authorities ID man shot while exchanging gunfire with Rochester police

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Police in Rochester have identified the man who was shot while exchanging gunfire with an officer last week.

Authorities say 34-year-old Silvon Simmons was arraigned Tuesday at Strong Memorial Hospital on charges of attempted murder of a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police say officers were investigating reports of shots fired and a man menacing with a handgun when Officer Joseph Ferrigno approached a vehicle backing out of a driveway. Authorities say Simmons fired once at Ferrigno and missed and the officer returned fire, hitting the suspect at least three times.

Simmons is listed in satisfactory condition. It’s unclear if he has an attorney who could comment on the charges.

Ferrigno is on administrative duty pending the outcome of an internal review. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
