BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — “If nobody else is going to take a stand if the adults are too afraid to stand up I want to bring some adult behavior to this district,”said Austin Harig.
Eighteen year old Austin Harig is a senior at Hutchinson-Central Technical High School who’s on a mission.
“I went through these Buffalo Public schools and I lived with these kids for several years of my life and I endured the same things they did and so that’s the perspective I bring to the board and that’s why I say I’m more qualified than Carl to hold this position.”
“Austin knows what it’s like to be in this Buffalo Public school system in the worst time that it’s ever been,” said Richard Hund, Hutchinson-Central Technical High School senior.
Harig has collected over 600 signatures for his petition.
He says he wants to unseat Paladino to bring harmony to the school board and some major upgrades to technology in Buffalo Public schools.
“We’re getting our butts kicked by the suburbs, we’re getting our butts kicked by the charter schools, we’re getting our butts kicked by everyone. we have computers that are dinosaurs,” said Harig.
Harig says if elected, he’d improve student support services to boost attendance rates and help students with special needs.
“You have a body of people making decisions for our kids he would definitely be there to play devils advocate he’d be there to answer questions that are crucial and important. he would be there to speak for his peers,” said Hutchinson-Central Technical High School Teacher Hilda Ramos.
News 4 reached out to Carl Paladino, he said “I admire the young mans spunk but I’m not sure if he’s ready for prime time yet. I’m not finished with my goals yet for the school system. when I am he’s welcome to challenge for the seat.”
The school board election is taking place on May 3rd.
