New redemption center offers paid job training for people with disabilities

NIAGARA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A redemption center in the town of Niagara is offering job training for people with disabilities. It’s called ‘Empties for Empower’ and it celebrated a grand opening today.

The center is located at 4701 Military road and was opened by non profit organization ‘Empower.’ It offers paid job training for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. They sort through the bottles and cans and handle cash returns and donations.

Empower also earns money back on every bottle and can.

“We have individuals who have intellectual or developmental disabilities who come here and work alongside individuals who do not have disaiblities and they’re also working with customers all day who come in and bring their bottles and cans,” said Jeff Paterson, Empower CEO.

The program is funded through the New York state office for people with developmental disabilities.

The center is open Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 and 9 to 1 on Saturday.
