Studies show eating fast food can mess with your hormones

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) –– We know fast food can taste good, but isn’t always good for us. Anew study says eating it can even mess with your hormones.

What you may not know, is how drive-thru burgers and Lean Cuisine’s can expose you to a hormone disrupting chemical.

A new report by the Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives found that people who ate fast food had higher levels of phthalates which is usually found in plastics and cleaning materials.

Researchers said this chemical can trickle into food because of the packaging materials surrounding it, workers wearing plastic gloves and equipment such as conveyor belts and tubes.

A Buffalo hormone doctor explains what effects this chemical could have on our bodies over time.

“Well if you take a man, our estrogen, estrodial, can increase with age and of course that can be detrimental to us. The women, some of those women develop breast and uterine cancers,” said Dr. Jack Bertolino, a Bio-identical Hormones Doctor.

Officials said more research is still needed to fully understand what effects could happen over time.

Doctors told News 4, you don’t need to quit eating fast food altogether, just to do it in moderation.
