Buffalo city employee, former bar owner, accused of stealing state sales tax

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A former bar owner who currently works as a City of Buffalo employee is facing felony charges for allegedly stealing state sales taxes.

Erie County District Attorney Michael Flaherty announced Nicholas Schaefer, 46, faces charges related to his ownership of Coach’s Corner Bar on Hopkins Road.

Schaefer allegedly didn’t file returns for $14,129 in owed taxes from December of 2013 through March of 2015. He allegedly kept the funds to help keep his bar afloat.

Prosecutors have filed charges of third-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal tax fraud in New York State Supreme Court.

Schaefer has since been working for the City of Buffalo as a parking enforcement officer, but faces a potential sentence of between two and a third to seven years in prison if convicted.

Shaefer was released on a promise to return to court.
