CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — After a dog bit off part of a 9-year-old’s finger in a Cheektowaga park, officers say they’ve got the dog in custody.
The 9-year-old lost part of his finger on Wednesday night at Cheektowaga Town Park while holding onto a fence when a pit bull on a leash ran up and latched onto the boy’s hand.
Police said the dog’s owner quickly left the scene with the dog, prompting police to ask the public for help in locating the dog.
Two days later, police say the dog is in custody, brought to police by the owner. Now the dog will be quarantined until officials can determine whether or not it has rabies.
The mother of the child whose hand will never be fully repaired said she’s waiting for further information from police, but admitted she is happy.
“I feel so much better for [my son] he really has been so mad at this lady and dog, and that this dog won’t be out with the possibility to bite someone else’s hand,” she said.
Investigation continues, and police say they’ll work to determine whether or not charges will be filed.
