Billy Dee Smith captains Bandits to postseason

Veteran Bandit looks to lead Buffalo to first Champion's Cup title since 2008.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – After 14 seasons with the Bandits, defenseman Billy Dee Smith has been through a lot in Buffalo, including winning the teams’ last NLL title in 2008.

And, after over a decade of dedication to the team he was named the captain of this year’s Bandits squad.

“They made me a leader for a reason so I just try not to change too much or let it change my game.” Smith remarked at a team practice in Hagersville, Ontario last week.

“He is everything as advertised to be quite honest with you.” Bandits Head Coach Troy Cordingley said. “He is a guy you want on your team. He will do anything for anybody and do whatever it takes.”

Billy Dee isn’t the only one with the Smith name on this season’s Bandits roster, his younger cousin Dhane recently broke the NLL’s regular season points record. Dhane grew up watching Billy Dee and playing alongside him has been a special experience.

“He has been a great leader this year and I wouldn’t give it to anyone else…the captain. So far, so good he is leading our team the way we should be led.” Dhane said.

Billy Dee also added that winning a title while being the team’s captain would be a milestone he will never forget.

“It would mean the world to us, I think, especially with this group. I think this group will be together for a long time. When we won it then a lot of guys were on their way out. So, it would be nice to get the first one out of the way and see where we can go from there.” Smith said.
