UB Bulls host “Basketball 101”

Elementary kids from local schools spent the day with the UB basketball teams.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Local elementary school kids got to spend Tuesday afternoon with the MAC Champion basketball teams at a program called “Basketball 101.”

The event, sponsored by M&T Bank, invited students from Westminster Community Charter School and Highgate Heights to Alumni Arena where they got to shoot hoops with the men and women’s teams.

“For everything they just show so much passion,” UB women’s center and Grand Island native Cassie Oursler said. “They are not per say basketball players but they love coming out here and doing this stuff with us.”

The kids also learned about nutrition and the benefits of staying in school. Men’s head coach Nate Oats said it was as much of a learning experience for the children as it was for his team.

“They get to come in and get to see some college athletes that have had to go through it and qualify academically and have done it,” Oats said. “I also think it is important for our kids to see how far they have come. At one point they were looking up to someone and now it is there turn to give back to the kids.”

The students concluded their day with a tour of the team’s locker rooms and posed for photos with the MAC Championship trophies.
