Buffalo Zoo welcomes new river otter pups

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two new faces have popped up at The Buffalo Zoo, according to an announcement released on Wednesday.

The zoo welcomed a couple of new American river otter pups at the end of February — the second pair born to 11-year-old Ellie and 9-year-old Rascal. The pair’s first pups were born in 2014.

The two-month-old otter pups, named Luke and Leia, after the Star Wars siblings of the same names, have been learning to swim in an inside pool and were just released to their outdoor habitat on Monday.

In the 1990s, the North American river otter population was brought away from near extinction, reaching a stable status due to conservation efforts.

The announcement of Luke and Leia comes on May 4 — the day known internationally as “Star Wars Day.”
