Former court clerk fails to appear to be sentenced in complicated small-town scandal

CASTILE, N.Y. (WIVB) — After pleading guilty to stealing $36,000 from her town, former Town of Castile Court clerk Katherine Ryan is wanted again.

Court officials say Ryan, who was set to be sentenced on Tuesday, did not appear to hear a judge’s decision on her case. She pleaded guilty to grand larceny, tampering with public records and official misconduct.

Her case is complex, unfolding in July when a judge stepped down after police issued official charges against Ryan. Police say they acted on a public tip and performed an audit, uncovering the theft of $36,000 from the court’s bank account over a period of several years.

Officers also raided her home — which happened to be the home of the then Judge Ron Carmichael — only to find a marijuana growing operation. Court documents revealed Ryan lived with Carmichael’s adult son Scott Carmichael, who also faced charges in the case. The former judge never faced charges in the case.

Ryan had been free on $10,000 bail and faced between just over two years and seven years in prison. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
