BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Malayah White has been running her whole life.
“My parents said they saw me running at the playgrounds or in our backyard and they were like ‘wow, she is actually pretty fast to be so little.'” The UB senior track star said.
Her passion for the sport landed the Mount Saint Mary’s graduate at the University at Buffalo for track and field. After two successful campaigns, White injured her foot her junior season. She found motivation from the setback.
“That whole injury brought me down, but this summer brought my confidence back up,” White said. “I had to work hard and do what I have to do. I knew it was my last year and I need to win.”
She entered her senior year in an explosive way, breaking the 60 meter and 100 meter school records during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. Making the feat even more impressive, she broke her own record for both races again in the season.
“I was just so shocked, I was not expecting it. I was just going out there to run and see what I could do. If I break it, I break it and if not, there’s always the next meet,” she said with a smile.
Now White and the Bulls are onto the MAC Championships, taking place in Toledo, Ohio. She is one of the favorites to win both the 100 meter and 60 meter races, which would help punch her ticket to the NCAA tournament.
