Former caregiver who sexually abused patient sentenced to 6 years of probation

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) — A People Inc. employee who admitted to sexually abusing a woman in his care was sentenced to six years of probation on Tuesday.

Williamsville resident George West, 57, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of sexual abuse after interactions with a disabled patient in June. He was fired in July.

“This defendant purposefully pursued this victim for his own sexual gratification, knowing that due to her disability, she was legally incapable of consenting to sexual contact with a staff member,” Prosecutor Patricia Gunning said. “The defendant violated the trust placed in him by the victim, her family and his employer.”

West, who was a direct care staff employee with the Amherst organization, was forced to register as a Level II sex offender and surrender his license to teach, following his guilty plea.

West will never be allowed to take care of a vulnerable person in New York again, according to the Justice Center.

During his sentencing, an order of protection was issued for West’s victim.
