Multi-force police chase across Niagara County ends in Wheatfield crash

WHEATFIELD, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police say a vehicle chase that started in Niagara Falls ended with a crash in the Town of Wheatfield Tuesday morning.

After a man was pulled over by police in the city sometime between 4 and 5 a.m., he proceeded to drive off, sparking a chase through nearby towns.

Niagara Falls Police followed the driver and his passenger for a distance, eventually being joined in their efforts by Town of Niagara Police and members of the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.

Town of Niagara Police ended their pursuit when the occupants, identified as Luther Douglas, 30, and Freddie Kennedy, 33, reached Lockport Rd. in Wheatfield.

Later, Town of Niagara Police spotted the wreckage of the suspects’ vehicle off of Mapleton Rd. Deputies with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office say it rolled over multiple times before coming to a stop.

Douglas and Kennedy were found injured at the scene after being ejected from the vehicle.

Both men, who are residents of Niagara Falls, were taken to ECMC — one by Mercy Flight helicopter, and the other by ambulance.

The crash closed off three roads — Shawnee Rd. from Mapleton to Lockport Rd., Lockport Rd. from Shawnee to Baer Rd. and Mapleton from Shawnee to Lockport Rd.

Shawnee was reopened just before 7 a.m.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. They say alcohol may be a possible factor in it.
