Man accused of stabbing girlfriend in Tonawanda brought to Erie County, arraigned

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Town of Tonawanda man who police arrested in Cattaraugus County on charges of stabbing to death his 50-year-old girlfriend Roberta Rybinski is back in Erie County and has been arraigned.

Prosecutors say a judge read charges to 49-year-old John Avent, explaining the second-degree murder charge. Avent allegedly murdered his girlfriend between March 3 and March 8 in their Newell Avenue apartment before fleeing to Cattaraugus County.

Police worked together to track Avent down after finding Rybinski’s body during a welfare check.

A judge remanded Avent to jail without bail. He’ll return to court on July 1. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
